Streaming Again! – Dr Rent goes Global!

Once upon a time, the little radio station that prompted me to create “Dr. Rent” was owned and hosted by Northcentral Technical College (NTC). Because of the resources available to us, not only were we broadcasting at all of 6 watts from the top of Mosinee Hill, but after a little while, we were streaming.

That means that anyone anywhere in the world could tune into any of the programming on our little radio station by going to a website.

Then one day, with no notice, because of budget reasons we were told, NTC pulled the plug on our little radio station.

However, NTC realized how important this little radio station had become, especially to the local Hmong population. So, with much time spent in negotiations, NTC allowed the Wausau Area Hmong Mutual Association (WAHMA) to take over the license from the FCC, and donated the radio equipment. Shortly thereafter, through the work of many volunteers and radio program hosts, WNRB-LP started broadcasting again with our mighty 6 watts.

However, the internet stream was gone, as that required technology and funding that we just didn’t have.

Fund drives were done, public service announcements were read, and most importantly grants were applied for. And, over time, funds were available to again explore getting our signal out on the internet for the entire world to enjoy. However, money was only one half of the equation. We also needed people who understand how streaming works to set up the equipment to do this, preferably to donate their time and resources.

Spear-headed by one of WAHMA’s hosts (Bouager Lo) and the host of our Sunday Reggae program (Bendan Cotter), work was done to set up our equipment to stream the signal. The last piece of the puzzle was completed by volunteer and long-time show host “Uncle Pete” (Pete Shank) when he modified our studio board to be able to send signals to the computer that would be hosting the stream.

As I was getting ready for the Apartment Association’s conference last week, I receive the email from WAHMA’s office manager. We are streaming again!!!!

If you have been interested in listening to the Dr. Rent Radio Show on Thursdays from 5-6 PM, but get a very weak signal from our 6 watt transmitter, or are comfortably out of our broadcast area (as I know I have regular blog readers from Stevens Point, Green Bay, Madison, and Milwaukee), you can now tune into the show from your computer.

Here is the link: (for Windows Media Player) (for itune, real player, etc.)

I missed the last two Dr Rent shows, last week because of that conference I blogged about earlier this week, and the week before to go to Madison and defend our access to CCAP. However, I will be on the air on Thursday at 5 PM with a number of great questions that have come up and as time permits, we will continue our discussion on the new lead-based paint renovation rules. Tomorrow morning, I will summarize the last show I did a few weeks ago, and give you a preview of the questions that are coming up.

It is an exciting time for WNRB-LP, and an exciting time for Dr. Rent, as I am now, once again, officially GLOBAL!!

Thats great. That radio station sounds like a good idea.

  3. Pretty excited about this. My audience is going to double in size! To two listeners!

  4. John — I tried using the link you supplied and it did open and start playing the radio station but all I heard was other music – is there a way to have it cue up at your how – or is there an easy way for me to do that? These streaming thing is new to me and I’m not as young as I used to be : )

  5. Tristan,

Thank you for trying to catch the show online. You have to remember that we are a very small, volunteer organization with a budget that consists of whatever we can pull in through donations. Our ability to stream the signal on the internet was thanks to a grant that we applied for.

We currently do not have the ability to “archive” the radio shows. That means, when you click that link, you get what the station is playing right now. Previous shows are not recorded and archived.

I do know that some have the ability to do just that. One of my favorite shows on WNRB-LP is a show that runs from 7 PM to about 8:30 on Friday evenings called “Conversation Digest”. I know they are able record and archive their shows on their own website, I do not know how they do that.

I know that one way I could archive my show now that we are streaming would be to use software such as audacity to record the show from the computer, but I assume there has to be an easier way.

So for now, they only way to catch the show at that link is to click on that link between 5 PM and 6 PM on Thursdays.

I know someone who might be able to help. Nah, never mind.
